In this class, we will learn how to read and speak the language of chess, known as algebraic notation. Kids will learn the rules of chess, piece movement and their values. Students will learn about check, the ways to escape a check, and how to win a game of chess by checkmate. Depending on how fast the kids learn, we will learn additional checkmate patterns. Also, kids will play full games of chess once showing understanding of the rules, piece movements, and checkmate.

In these classes, children will learn how to make logical arguments and present your ideas clearly and persuasively. It effectively prepares students for the complexities of algebra and teaches strategic problem-solving techniques for prestigious middle school math contests such as MATHCOUNTS, MOEMS, and AMC 8. Challenging students beyond traditional middle school prealgebra, this course fosters deep mathematical understanding. It's ideal for ambitious students (5th grade or up) who have mastered pre-algebra.

The curriculum of this course is based on the book Art of Problem Solving- Introduction to Algebra (2nd edition). The course will cover most of the topics that are taught in the regular middle school Algebra 1 course in grade 8 or 9, and aims to challenge students for deep understanding of math concepts, such as counting & probability, geometry, and number theory. It is ideal for students who are looking for challenging math problems and/or systematically preparing middle/high school math contests. This course is suitable for driven students (5th grade or up) who have mastered the pre-algebra courses.
